IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

M.D. Claiborne & Associates, L.L.C. - Dermatology Specialists

Cutera Limelight is a 4th generation Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) device for the treatment of sun spots, rosacea, redness, hair removal, and facial rejuvenation. It is safe, non-invasive, and relatively painless (it feels like a rubber band popping your skin). It can also be used on the areas besides the face — such as the chest, neck, and arms for photorejuvenation.

IPL should not be used on patients that have experienced a significant amount of recent sun exposure or those patients with darker skin types.

  • How is IPL performed?
A cool clear gel is applied to the area being treated. Eye shields are put in place to prevent ocular damage from the light. With the patient in a comfortable, relaxed position, the IPL handpiece is gently applied to the skin and light pulses are applied. Treatments usually take approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on which area is being treated.
  • How many treatements will I need?
In general patients have a series of two to four treatments, approximately one month apart.
  • How will I look after each treatment?
Most patients experience a few days of redness and possible pinpoint bruising after the IPL procedure. Some brown spots may appear darker for a few days,  then peel off.  You can apply makeup immediately after IPL treatment if necessary. It is imperative that you protect your skin from the sun following treatment with a high quality zinc oxide sunscreen.
